Answers to frequently asked questions about faculty and staff mental health concerns at Southern Miss.
Employee Assistance Program
All benefit eligible employees have access to the EAP -Guidance Resources®, which can support anyone in the benefit eligible employee’s household and dependents away at college.
Services available: confidential emotional support, work-life solutions, legal guidance, and financial resources. Employees can access 3 free visits per person, per issue, per year.

Moffitt Health Center
Moffitt Health Center offers comprehensive health care to students, faculty, and staff. You can also tell your doctor or nurse about any mental or emotional problems you're having, and they can help you find the best place to go for support.
Services available for mental health: Evaluation including medication options for anxiety, depression, stress, grief, attention and concentration difficulties and sleep disorders. In house laboratory available for same day results for most lab tests.
Typical wait time: No wait time. Appointments are typically available on the same day.
Student Fee: $20 office visit plus cost of any lab/x-ray/ procedures (Health Insurance can be filed)
Faculty/Staff Fee: $20 office visit plus cost of any lab/x-ray/ procedures (Health Insurance can be filed)

Mental Health First Aid Training
The Student Counseling Services oversees the Mental Health First Aid training for faculty and staff to recognize mental health concerns and crisis. This training includes 2-3 hours of pre-work in an online module and a full day training with two of the MHFA trainers. Check the CFD workshops page for current offerings of MHFA.
Center for Behavioral Health
The Center for Behavioral Health is housed in the College of Education and Human Sciences, and offers services for children, adolescents, and adults for both community members and USM students, faculty, and staff. The center is a training center for graduate students in counseling, clinical, and school psychology with all graduate students supervised by licensed psychologists.
Services available: Individual and group therapy and psychological assessment for anxiety, depression, behavioral issues, ADHD, developmental concerns, grief, eating concerns, substance use, relationship issues, academic/learning concerns, career counseling, and other common challenges. Appointment required.
Typical wait time: Varies depending on service. Typically, several months.
Student Fee: Therapy - $10; Evaluation - $225; Group - $5
Faculty/Staff Fee: Therapy - Sliding Scale. Call the CBH to inquire about cost. Evaluation - $350

Center for Family Therapy
The Center for Family Therapy is housed in the College of Education and Human Sciences, and offers support for individual concerns, couple and relationship concerns, and family concerns for both community members and USM students, faculty, and staff.
Services available: Individual, couple and family therapy for anxiety/depression, self-esteem, communication, sexual orientation, relationship concerns, premarital, marital, remarriage, intimacy concerns, parenting, blended families, grief/loss, life transition issues.
Typical wait time: Varies depending on services being requested.
Student Fee: $15 for consultation appointments. $5 for subsequent therapy appointments.
Faculty/Staff Fee: $30 for consultation appointments. $20 for subsequent therapy appointments.
Sliding Fee Scale for those seeking services that are not affiliated with the university.
Hours of Operation: While center operation hours vary slightly each semester, evening appointments are available several days each week. Every effort will be made to schedule the first appointment within a week of the initial contact.

Student Counseling Services
Student Counseling Services (SCS) is the University’s primary referral source for student mental health concerns. SCS offers currently enrolled students free, confidential counseling services and can provide referrals to campus and community resources. Students living outside Mississippi can receive a one-time consultation to assure they are informed about resources in their community.
Services available: Individual and group therapy, crisis response, referrals to on- and off-campus resources, and education/outreach opportunities
Typical wait time: average 1 week for a screening and/or crisis walk-ins available daily, 8am – 4pm
