Mississippi Community College Transfer Guides
Page Content
Dear Advisor,
The College of Arts and Sciences is one of four degree-granting colleges at The University
of Southern Mississippi (USM). It is composed of fourteen schools housing eighty-five
majors and sixty minors. These encompass options in the creative arts, humanities,
social sciences, and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math).
We know that many students choose to complete an associate degree at a Mississippi community college prior to transferring to a four-year undergraduate program. In most cases, the bachelor's degree can be completed in two additional years. However, for some degrees, this is dependent on taking the right combination of classes prior to transferring. We are committed to making the transition from your institution to ours as seamless as possible.
Our transfer guides are designed to let you know what students must, should, and could do to better prepare to enter our programs.
The pages that follow include a page introducing the opportunities in each discipline followed by major-specific guides to what the community college student should do prior to completing their associate degree and transferring to USM. These pages also include contact information should you have any questions regarding the programs.
We appreciate all that you do to help prepare students who complete their degrees at USM. We are committed to doing what we can to assist you and your students.
If you have any questions, please contact our schools or call the College of Arts and Sciences at 601.266.4315.
Sincerely,
Dr. Chris Winstead, Dean
Transfer Guides
Post-secondary students in the State of Mississippi often choose to attend a Mississippi community college (MS CC) and earn an associate degree before transferring to USM to complete their bachelor's degree.
To make this transition as smooth as possible and to ensure no credits are lost, we have created transfer guides. In most, but not all, cases, students may complete a bachelor's degree in what we refer to as a '2+2' format.
2 years at a MS CC for an associate degree, which includes general education coursework
+
2 years at USM to complete the bachelor's degree.
Please use the key at the front of each guide (.pdf) to determine which courses you must, should, or could take at a Mississippi community college before transferring to Southern Miss.
