To be a TRIO-Student Support Services (SSS) Scholar, a student must be a citizen or permanent resident of the U.S. and must be enrolled at The University of Southern Mississippi. Additionally, the U.S. Department of Education stipulates that scholars must fall into one or more of the following categories:
- A first-generation college student (neither parent graduated from a four-year college or university)
- A low income student as defined by the U.S. Department of Education
- A student with a documented disability (learning or physical)
Additionally, students must demonstrate academic need with a GPA of 3.0 or less and an ACT score of 22 or less. Other academic need criteria may also be considered. The TRIO-SSS Program at Southern Miss is limited to serve 200 students.
