Page Content

The Office of Sustainability is hosting a series of events throughout October to celebrate Campus Sustainability Month. All events are free and we encourage the campus community and the wider community to take advantage of these informative and fun demonstrations. If you have any questions or suggestions please email me at melissa.covington@usm.edu .

October 1st - October 31st - Bra-Vo Donation Drive, October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The Office of Sustainability is hosting the annual Bra-Vo donation drive. Our staff will collect gently used, reusable bras to reduce the number of textiles in landfills. Boxes will be located on the 1st floor of every residence hall and for those not living on campus but wish to donate, please contact melissa.covington@usm.edu. Our office will collect the donations every Friday and bras that are in good condition will be donated to women in need.

Sweet Potato Drop, October 7th, 11am – 2pm West Memorial Drive between the Hub and Walker Science.  The Office of Inclusion and Multicultural Engagement will be partnering with the Society of St. Andrew to distribute sweet potatoes from Mississippi farmers to local charities serving those in need.  These unmarketable potatoes would otherwise be headed for the landfill, as they were either left in the field after mechanized harvest, or cosmetically unacceptable for commercial sale.  The Society of St. Andrew fights against food waste, hunger, and climate change simultaneously.  Come out and support their efforts!  For more information, contact Christina Bracey Christina.Bracey@usm.edu.

Water Taste Test Challenge, October 12th, 11am – 2pm, Shoemaker Square, Water is one of the most precious resources on earth and we should treat it that way.  One of your challenges today is to not buy bottled water.  To find out why bottled water is bad for the environment and society, watch the short film The Story of Bottled Water.  Do you think that bottled water tastes better than water from the tap?  Stop by Shoemaker Square from 11am-2pm and test your palate at the water taste test challenge.

Composting Lunch and Learn, October 14th 12pm – 1pm, Edible Orchard, Join us on the front steps of the Payne Center as we present Composting 101. Learn the importance and benefits of composting while touring USM’s Edible Orchard.

Outdoor Yoga, October 22nd, 12pm – 1pm, Spirit Park, The Office of Sustainability and Recreational Sports are sponsoring an outdoor yoga class at Spirit Park.  This is a great way to get some exercise, fresh air, and to reflect on the choices we can make to reduce our impact on the environment. Lunch will be provided.

I.D.E.A.L Campus Cleanup, October 27th, 11am – 1pm, Shoemaker Square, Join I.D.E.A.L, the Office of Sustainability, and the Eco Ambassadors as they team up to conduct a campus wide clean up. Grabbers, gloves, and bags will be provided.

Social Justice Fair, October 28th, 11:00am - 2:00pm, Shoemaker Square,  Organizations from campus and the wider community will be sharing their messages of respect, dignity, equality, and justice.  Discover volunteer opportunities, show your support, or simply get informed about social justice issues.
