A hub for artificial intelligence (AI) and cybersecurity research at The University of Southern Mississippi—the Computing Research Hub—aims to foster an ecosystem that advances student and faculty research through its programming, empowering Golden Eagles to become the next generation of innovators and leaders in the industry.
The Computing Research Hub recently received a $32,000 grant from the Jimmy A. Payne Foundation, who is also funding 16 other projects across campus. The funding will support academic excellence by establishing what is dubbed a research hub—a collaborative community focused on research, student development activities, and industry partnerships—all designed to transform the learning experience of undergraduate and graduate students in the School of Computing Sciences and Computer Engineering (CSCE).
“Our mission is to empower students to explore ideas, innovate and lead in the ever-evolving technology landscape,” said Dr. Nick Rahimi, director of the Computing Research Hub and assistant professor in the School of CSCE. “Through active mentorship and a collaborative, hands-on research environment, we will equip our students with the skills and experience needed to be ready for life.”
Dr. Chris Winstead, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, lauded Dr. Rahimi’s commitment to shaping a future-ready workforce.
“Dr. Rahimi has been a driving force in engaging our programs with national initiatives in cybersecurity and artificial intelligence. Through this new hub for computing research, he and our distinguished faculty will support students in projects that provide research experiences to broaden their knowledge and foster connections with industry leaders—preparing them for the next steps in their careers.”
Under the guidance of faculty and graduate mentors, students will have the opportunity to work on research projects, grant proposals, and publications, with a focus on topics such as AI, cybersecurity, machine learning, and emerging technologies. Whether participating in monthly seminars, workshops, or networking events, students will also have the chance to connect with and learn from industry experts, building relationships that can lead to internships or other professional opportunities.
“By transforming our research engagement, we will prepare our students here at Southern Miss for graduate studies and industry careers,” said Dr. Rahimi. “I’m grateful to the Jimmy A. Payne Foundation and the Payne family for their generous support in making our vision a reality.”
