High school students considering a career in health care can get a jump on that dream by attending the Health Professions Summer Camp, set for June 12 at The University of Southern Mississippi (USM). The camp, designed for rising 9th-12th graders, will be held from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. at Harkins Hall on the Hattiesburg campus.
The USM College of Nursing and Health Profession is hosting the second-annual camp which will give students a chance to:
- Learn about a variety of health career possibilities.
- Participate in hands-on activities related to each career.
- Discuss the next steps in their journey toward a career in health.
“Many young people have probably never heard of, or considered, several of our programs,” said Jennifer Wilmoth, Academic Program Manager in the School of Health Professions. “This a great opportunity for them to learn more about our programs before beginning their college journey.”
Camp participants will interact with key faculty members in each of the health professions programs offered at USM through hands-on experiences. Lunch and a T-shirt are included in the $40 registration fee.
Wilmoth notes that hosting this type of camp helps bring awareness of the many health-related careers available to students.
“Most high school students have heard of professions like doctor, dentist, physical therapist, etc. However, many have not considered the best undergraduate programs/majors to reach those graduate level programs of interest or have considered lesser-known undergraduate programs that offer great career opportunities,” said Wilmoth. “Our hope is to help high school students better navigate their undergraduate college careers to reach their health care career goals.”
