Center for Study of the Gulf South to host Book Talks

The Center for the Study of the Gulf South at The University of Southern Mississippi (USM) will host two free book talks this month, with both events open to members of the Southern Miss and local communities.

Wednesday, Sept. 11 | 5:30 p.m. 

Dr. Grace Hale, professor of American Studies and history at the University of Virginia, will present on her book In the Pines: A Lynching, A Reckoning, A Lie in Gonzales Auditorium in the Liberal Arts Building (room 108). An award-winning historian, Dr. Hale is internationally recognized as an expert on modern American culture and regional culture of the U.S. South.

Monday, Sept. 16 | 5:30 p.m.  

Journalist and author Tracie McMillan will discuss her book The White Bonus: Five Families and the Cash Value of Racism in America, in the Gonzales Auditorium in the Liberal Arts Building (room 108). McMillan currently manages coverage of worker organizing for the media outlet Capital & Main; her work has previously been featured in the New York Times, Mother Jones, National Geographic, and the Village Voice, among other publications. She is the award-winning author of the New York Times bestseller, The American Way of Eating. 

McMillan’s presentation is also supported by USM’s School of Humanities, School of Social Science and Global Studies, and School of Interdisciplinary Studies and Professional Development.
