One of only two Republicans on the U.S. House of Representatives’ January 6 Committee investigating the 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol will be the guest speaker at The University of Southern Mississippi’s (USM) next University Forum series program.
Former Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-Ill.) will speak Tuesday, Oct. 10 at 6:30 p.m. for ‘An Evening with Adam Kinzinger” at Bennett Auditorium on the USM Hattiesburg campus. Admission is free and the public is invited.
A U.S. Air Force pilot who served in the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts, Kinzinger served six terms in the U.S. House of Representatives and is still an active member of the Air National Guard. In addition to his service on the January 6 Committee, His work in Congress focused on combating election disinformation, creating employment opportunities for military veterans, cutting taxes, curtailing environmental legislation, and fighting the opioid epidemic.
In 2016, the popular moderate announced he would not support former President Trump, saying, “I'm an American before I'm a Republican.” His soon to be released autobiography is titled Renegade: My Life in Faith, the Military, and Defending America from Trump's Attack on Democracy.
“For 49 years, University Forum has brought speakers to campus who challenge us to be better and more informed citizens,” said Dr. Andrew Haley, director of University Forum and an associate professor of history. “Former Rep. Adam Kinzinger’s life - his military service and his time in Congress - is a powerful reminder of what is required of a citizen in a democracy. Citizens are asked to make sacrifices for the common good and make decisions, grounded in the best information available, that uphold the nation’s shared values.
“No matter your political preference, there is much to learn from Adam Kinzinger about citizenship and integrity.”
