Alpha Phi Alpha USM Chapter, Graduate Chapter Award Scholarships, Honor Community Members at MLK Jr. Event

Several area high school students were awarded scholarships, and individuals with stellar records of service to the Hattiesburg area were honored, during the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Prayer Breakfast held Jan. 16 on The University of Southern Mississippi (USM) Hattiesburg campus. The event was hosted by the Mu Xi chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity at USM, along with the fraternity’s local Mu Gamma Lambda graduate chapter.
The fraternity’s “Go to High School, Go to College” program awards textbook scholarships to deserving high school seniors who plan to attend college in the fall. Students from the Pine Belt who received this scholarship at the event include those from the following schools:
*Hattiesburg High School: Rubba Akwieri, Logan Green, Kymrie Lofton, Dillon Brown, Javarius Molden, Cornelius
Wilson, Kamron Brooks
*Laurel High School: Harmony Thomas
*Forrest County AHS: David Combest
*Petal High School: Cinsere Clems
*Perry Central High School: Tavell Whitfield Jr.
*Richton High School: Alyssa MCSwain
*North Forrest High School: Mya McInnis
*Wayne County High School: Nigel Johnson
*Oak Grove High School: Abby Williams
*Sumrall High School: Cassie Mardis
*Purvis High School: Mason Beverly
*Lumberton High School: Aysia Holder
*Columbia High School: Alana Brown
*East Marion High School: Bryan Ducre
*West Marion High School: Akaziah Magee
Community award recipients include the following:
*Linda Leggett and Gwen Battle – Youth Services
*James Moore – Community Services (aid in the prevention of overdose)
*Shelia Floyd – Civic and Youth Services
*Michael Battle and Tonsa Vaughn – Education Services
*Joy Lubritz – Community Service (service to women and families)
*Allen D. Anderson – Humanitarian Award (service to benevolent causes and youth)
*Michael Marks – Douglass T. Baker Memorial Award
Mu Gamma Lambda chapter members include MLK Jr. Prayer Breakfast Committee Chairman Dr. Eddie Holloway; Dr. Robert Williams, chapter treasurer; Roger Jones, chapter scholarship chairman; and William Robinson, chapter golf tournament coordinator. Rev. David Garraway serves as president for the chapter. Austin Lindsey serves as president of USM’s Mu Xi chapter.
“Our dear fraternity is pleased to recognize these outstanding members of our community, as well as support the dreams of our treasured young people as they prepare to take the next big step of their lives in readying for college this coming fall,” Dr. Holloway said.
