The University of Southern Mississippi’s (USM) College of Nursing and Health Professions’ School of Professional Nursing Practice is one of 10 schools selected by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) to help transform nursing education and practice nation-wide.

The School of Professional Nursing Practice (SPNP) will receive $100,000 from the AACN that will be used to develop and implement competency-based learning and assessment in two out of 10 areas of professional nursing competency. In conjunction with technical support from AACN through March 2025, the funding will also support development of an adaptable framework for competency-based education that can be applied across diverse academic nursing programs and practice settings.

Selected participants were announced Dec. 5. USM was one of 10 institutions chosen out of 76 submitted applications.

Participating schools are a mixture of public and private institutions, large and small schools, rural and urban-serving programs, and are geographically diverse. USM is one of three institutions in the south to be selected.
