Four teams participating in The University of Southern Mississippi’s (USM) Eagle ESports recently secured the lead in their divisions, with Rainbow 6, League of Legends, Rocket League and Overwatch looking to finish strong in the regular season of the National ESports Collegiate Conference (NECC).
USM Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs Dr. Denny Bubrig says he’s pleased with the progress the program has made in only its third semester of active competition. Approximately 50 USM students participate in the program.
“We have made fantastic progress, but there’s more to be done,” he said of the competitiveness of the USM teams. “We want to be one of the best programs in the region, if not the country.”
Since USM Eagle ESports first launched, collegiate programs have doubled nationally, Dr. Bubrig further noted.
“When we first started our research into starting a program here, there were a little over 200 programs across the country, and now that number is close to 440,” he said. “It’s a growing industry that appears to be here for a while.”
