Koch Leverages Natural Disaster Experiences, Personal Story to Help Citizens, Elected
Leaders
10/13/2017 - Kathleen Koch’s acclaimed news coverage of Hurricane Katrina and other
natural disasters educated viewers about the realities those affected by these events
on the ground. Now Koch, a University of Southern Mississippi alumna, author and
former reporter with CNN, is leveraging her experience documenting Mother Nature’s
fury to help citizens, elected officials and private sector leaders make sound decisions
about how to prepare and recover from the ravages of storms, earthquakes and fires

Newspaper's Depiction of Life at Camp Shelby during WWII focus of Oct. 24 Lecture
10/4/2017 - University Libraries’ Special Collections at The University of Southern
Mississippi will present the second lecture in the fall series “Lectures, Lore and
Lessons: Mississippi at the Bicentennial” on Oct. 24 at 6 p.m. at the Hattiesburg
Public Library. Dr. Willie R. Tubbs will discuss Camp Shelby during World War II as

USM Cheif Communication Officer Honored by Regional Public Relations Organization
9/26/2017 - Jim Coll, Chief Communication Officer at The University of Southern Mississippi,
has been honored by the Southern Public Relations Federation (SPRF) as a Senior Practitioner.
The honor, which was bestowed on seven public relations professionals in the region
this year, honors SPRF members who are “recognized by their peers as veteran public

Journalism Students Get Opportunity to Have Work Published

School of Mass Communication Helps Secure Grant to Present Levitt AMP Hattiesburg
Music Series
1/12/2017 - The Mortimer & Mimi Levitt Foundation recently named Hattiesburg one of
15 small to mid-sized towns and cities across America to win a Levitt AMP Grant Award
of $25,000 in matching funds to present a free concert series at Chain Park. The University
of Southern Mississippi’s School of Mass Communication & Journalism submitted the
Levitt AMP proposal in conjunction with the Hattiesburg Arts Council and the City
of Hattiesburg.
