Michael McCarter is a 1994 Southern Miss graduate. After an internship at the Pensacola News Journal, Mr. McCarter began working for The Times in Shreveport, La., as a staff photographer and later as assistant photo editor. In 1998 he moved to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution as a photo editor, then served as the features department photo editor, the national desk and Sunday 1A photo editor, photo editor for special projects and digital photo manager for AJC.com. Mr. McCarter was the primary photo editor for the AJC's coverage of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, hurricanes Katrina and Rita, a 22-part series on the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and a special section commemorating the life and death of Coretta Scott King. Mr. McCarter was named director of photography at The Cincinnati Enquirer shortly before his induction into the MCJ Hall of Fame in 2007.
