Definition

The Gilman International Scholarship Program is a nationally competitive scholarship for students who want to study or intern abroad. It is for students who might not otherwise study abroad due to limited financial means. Gilman is administered by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs which means that the priority of the student should be to promote a mutual understanding between the United States and another country.

What the Award Offers

Up to $5,000 to help with study abroad costs, such as program fees, tuition, room and board, airfare, and other travel expenses. Students studying critical languages may also qualify for additional funding.

Who Should Apply

Pell grant eligible undergraduates.

  • GPA Requirement: Although there is no specific GPA requirement, academic performance is still considered, and transcripts are submitted as part of the application process.
  • Citizenship Status: Must be a U.S. citizen or national.

  • Number of Application Cycles Per Year: 2 (with students traveling year-round)
  • General Application Dates: Deadlines are the first Tuesday in October and the first Tuesday in March. Award dates are based on the time of travel chosen. Announcements are generally in December and May, but there are also other notification dates depending on the time during the academic year and summer that the trip will be taken.  
  • Campus Deadlines: One week prior to the Gilman deadline. This scholarship requires University endorsements. Contact the NCPA office when you begin the application process.

* Ask NCPA or the Study Abroad Office about the Gilman-McCain Scholarship. This is a $5,000 scholarship open to child and spousal dependents of active or activated U.S. military personnel for study abroad.

The Fulbright UK Summer Institute Program seeks to create cross-cultural understanding by giving American students the opportunity to experience life in the U.K. through the participation at a British University (in England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, or Wales) for 3 -4 weeks. Fulbright is administered by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs which means that the priority of the student should be to promote a mutual understanding between the United States and the UK.

Undergraduates with at least two years of studies left to complete by program-launch.

  • GPA Requirement: 3.7 or higher
  • Citizenship Status: Must be a U.S. citizen and possess a U.S. passport.

The Fulbright Student Program is a prestigious award that gives students the opportunity to study, teach, conduct research, and exchange ideas abroad within a partnership of over 140 countries. Fulbright Student Program awards allow students to stay in a host country for approximately 8 months to 1 year (depending on each countries’ fulfillment requirements). Fulbright is administered by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs which means that the priority of the student should be to promote a mutual understanding between the United States and another country.

Usually includes travel, cost of living stipend, books and tuition, healthcare, research allowances, enrichment activities, and language enhancement costs.

Who Should Apply

Fulbright is open to graduate students, young professionals, and artists. The optimal time to apply for the Fulbright Student Program is during the summer of junior year (rising senior). However, a bachelor’s degree or equivalent is required prior to the project start date.

  • General Application Dates: Applications open in April and usually close the second Tuesday in October with semi-finalist & finalist notifications between January and spring of the following year. 
  • Campus Deadlines: There is a campus deadline on the last weekday in August. This scholarship usually requires a University endorsement through NCPA. Contact the NCPA office when you begin the application process.
