Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner At Southern Miss
Advanced practice nurses are registered nurses who have gained advanced preparation for expanded clinical practice. Advanced practice nurses must be grounded in theory and utilize research and evidence as guides to their clinical practice. We have two options for the Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner at Southern Miss: BSN to DNP and Post-Graduate Certificate.
The baccalaureate degree program in nursing (BSN), Doctor of Nursing Practice program, and post-graduate APRN certificate program at The University of Southern Mississippi are accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, 655 K Street NW, Suite 750, Washington, DC 20001, 202-887-6791, and the Board of Trustees of State Institutions of Higher Learning.
Program Emphasis
Each program emphasizes leadership in nursing practice and prepares nurse scholars for leadership in clinical, educational, and administrative positions. Advanced practice nursing programs at Southern Miss share rigorous and demanding expectations with a scholarly approach to the discipline and a commitment to the advancement of the profession.
The didactic courses are online with one campus visit per semester and students complete clinical requirements in their own community or nearby communities. Both full time and part time study is available.
- Baccalaureate in Nursing from an institution accredited by the National League for Nursing Commission for Nursing Education Accreditation (formerly NLNAC) or the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education;
- Submitted official scores from the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) including score of 3.0 or higher on the analytical section;
- Applicants to the nurse practitioner program must have at least one year of recent clinical experience as an RN
- 3.0 or higher grade point average (GPA) in undergraduate nursing courses
- Completed an introductory course in statistics;
- Evidence of current unrestricted registered nurse (RN) Mississippi license.
The BSN-DNP option requires 73 hours over 3 years. The MSN option requires 46 credits during 5 semesters of full time study including summers. The Post-Graduate Certificate option requires 28 credit hours during 5 semesters. Our Nurse Practitioner programs are fully aligned with the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties Competencies for Nurse Practitioners and the APRN Consensus Model. Upon completion of the Nurse Practitioner programs, graduates are eligible to obtain APRN Board certification from the American Nurses Credentialing Center or the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners.

PROFESSIONAL LICENSURE DISCLOSURE
The University of Southern Mississippi School of Professional Nursing Practice has determined that completion of the Nursing (BSN to DNP Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, DNP) and the Nursing (Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner), Graduate Certificate both prepare a student to take the psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner exam administered by the American Nursing Credentialing Center (ANCC) required to apply for state certification. Individuals applying for licensure will also be required by ANCC to complete faculty-supervised clinical hours. It is each individual’s responsibility to understand, evaluate, and comply with all requirements relating to national certification exams for the state in which he or she intends to practice as requirements vary widely.
