Why should I become a Learning Assistant?
The most inspiring part of being an LA is that you get to watch the students grow throughout the semester and gain more confidence in their academic abilities.

Becoming an LA provides you with many opportunities:
- Develop an understanding of teaching and learning practices.
- Strengthen your content knowledge.
- Cultivate your relationships with faculty and with your peers.
- Develop skills to become a life-long learner.
- Become the reason another student is successful in their academic journey.
- Earn a wage for the hours you work!
FAQs
- The expected time commitment is 8 hours per week for a minimum of one semester. LA appointments may span multiple semesters.
- The hourly pay rate is either above minimum wage for the state or the Federal Work Study rate, depending upon the student's qualifications (based on Financial Aid).
- LAs must have completed the course in which they will serve as an LA with a grade of B or higher and be interested in teaching, mentoring, and further developing their knowledge of pedagogy and the discipline.
- LAs must maintain full-time enrollment status (12 hours or more).
- LAs must have a 3.0 GPA or above.
- LAs must commit to 1 full semester, 8 hours per week. They may apply for subsequent semesters after successfully completing their first semester.
- LAs are expected to attend a pedagogy course in which they learn to develop techniques they will use in the active learning classroom.
- LAs are expected to attend the classes in which they have been assigned as an LA, and to participate in the learning happening in that class.
- LAs are expected to attend a weekly meeting with their professor and to provide feedback on the learning happening in the class.
Students interested in becoming an LA are strongly encouraged to speak with the faculty member before applying.
